Why Veterans Are at Higher Risk
Many veterans live with PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain, and disrupted sleep, the same conditions benzodiazepines are often prescribed for. That exposure raises the odds of long-term use and dependence.
Combat and service-related stress can also make it harder to tolerate withdrawal symptoms, and the reluctance to ask for help is common. Many veterans are used to pushing through discomfort, which is risky with benzodiazepines because stopping abruptly can cause seizures.
Veterans are also more likely to be prescribed multiple sedating or pain medications at once, which adds overdose risk when combined with benzodiazepines.

VA Guidance on Benzodiazepines and PTSD
The VA and Department of Defense clinical practice guidelines for PTSD recommend against using benzodiazepines to treat PTSD. They do not clearly help core PTSD symptoms, can interfere with trauma-focused therapy, and carry risks of dependence and misuse.
If you have been taking a benzodiazepine for PTSD or related anxiety and sleep problems, that is a good reason to talk with a clinician about a supervised taper and about evidence-based alternatives such as trauma-focused therapy and non-benzodiazepine medication.
At iRely, a supervised taper is paired with trauma-informed therapy and dual diagnosis care, so PTSD is treated directly rather than managed with a sedative.

Veterans Benzodiazepine Rehab Questions
Straight answers to the questions people ask most.
Why are veterans at higher risk of benzodiazepine dependence?
Veterans are more likely to live with PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia, conditions for which benzodiazepines are often prescribed, which raises the risk of long-term use.
Are benzodiazepines recommended for PTSD?
No. The VA and Department of Defense PTSD guidelines recommend against them. Trauma-focused therapy and certain non-benzodiazepine medications are preferred.
Is it safe to stop benzodiazepines suddenly?
No. Abrupt discontinuation can cause seizures and delirium. A supervised taper is the safe approach.
Will treatment address my PTSD too?
Yes. PTSD, anxiety, and sleep are assessed and treated alongside the taper through trauma-informed therapy and dual diagnosis care.
Can I use VA or TRICARE benefits at iRely?
Call us and we will help you check which of your benefits may apply, including any VA Community Care options.
What if I also take opioids for pain?
Combining benzodiazepines and opioids raises overdose risk. Tell us about all medications so your plan can be built safely.
Is my information confidential?
Your treatment information is protected by federal privacy rules and shared only with your written consent unless the law requires otherwise.
Does insurance cover benzodiazepine rehab for veterans at iRely?
Most PPO plans are accepted, usually out of network. Call 818-262-3537 and we will verify your benefits for free, typically in about five to ten minutes.
