Withdrawal Timeline

What Is Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and Valium calm the brain by boosting GABA. With regular use, the brain adapts and relies on the drug to stay balanced.

When the dose is lowered or stopped, the nervous system becomes overactive, producing anxiety, insomnia, tremor, and in serious cases seizures. This is withdrawal, and it can occur in people who take their medication exactly as prescribed.

How it unfolds depends on the specific drug, the dose, how long it was taken, how quickly it is reduced, and your own health. That is why no two timelines are identical.

The timeline you will see online is a typical pattern, not a promise. A clinician can build a plan around your specific history.

Timeline

General Timeline by Phase

This pattern applies to abrupt discontinuation. Short-acting drugs start sooner, and long-acting drugs start later and can last longer.

Early

Hours to days

Rebound anxiety, insomnia, irritability, tremor, and sweating begin as the drug clears.

Acute

Days to 2 weeks

Symptoms peak: panic, muscle tension, nausea, sensory sensitivity, and the highest risk of seizures.

Subacute

Weeks 2 to 6

Physical symptoms ease, while anxiety, mood changes, and sleep problems come in waves.

Protracted

Months

Some people have lingering symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia, and sensory symptoms, that slowly fade.

Common Terms

"Benzo Belly" and "Benzo Flu" Explained

"Benzo belly" and "benzo flu" are informal terms people use online, not formal diagnoses. Benzo belly describes digestive symptoms such as nausea, bloating, cramping, and changes in bowel habits. Benzo flu describes flu-like symptoms such as aches, chills, sweating, headaches, and fatigue.

Both are recognized as part of how withdrawal can feel, since the nervous system also regulates digestion and temperature. They are a reason to take symptoms seriously and to talk with a clinician rather than ride them out alone.

Withdrawal Timeline

Why Cold Turkey Can Cause Seizures

The brain depends on the drug to keep excitability in check. Remove it suddenly and excitatory activity surges, which can trigger seizures, delirium, and hallucinations. The risk exists even in people who only took the drug as prescribed.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration strengthened the boxed warning on all benzodiazepines in 2020 to describe dependence and life-threatening withdrawal reactions. A gradual, supervised taper is the standard of care.

Treatment

Medical Detox at iRely

At iRely Recovery, withdrawal is managed through a supervised taper with 24/7 clinical monitoring. Clinicians may substitute a longer-acting benzodiazepine, reduce the dose in small steps guided by your symptoms, and use comfort and adjunct medications when appropriate. Learn more about our benzo detox program.

Detox is paired with therapy and dual diagnosis care so the reasons for benzodiazepine use are treated, not just the dependence.
