Women's Treatment

Why Women-Specific Care Matters

National data show that women are prescribed benzodiazepines at higher rates than men, often for anxiety, panic, or trouble sleeping. That means more women are at risk of dependence from medication they started under a doctor's care.

Women also often face different pressures that shape both use and recovery: caregiving responsibilities, hormonal and life-stage changes, and a higher likelihood of trauma histories. Treatment that ignores those pieces can miss what is driving the use.

Shame can be a barrier too, especially for women who took what was prescribed and now feel they have failed. Care that is individualized and free of judgment makes it easier to ask for help.

Dependence that began with a prescription is a medical problem, not a personal failing.

Underlying Conditions

Co-Occurring Anxiety and Trauma

Anxiety disorders, panic, depression, and trauma are common among women who develop benzodiazepine dependence. When the drug is removed, those conditions often return, which is why treating only the withdrawal usually is not enough.

At iRely, anxiety, trauma, and sleep are assessed and treated alongside the taper through trauma-informed therapy and dual diagnosis care. The goal is to build ways to manage symptoms that do not rely on a sedative.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, tell us at your first call. Stopping benzodiazepines suddenly during pregnancy can be risky, and care needs to be coordinated with an obstetric provider.
