Available 24/7 · 100% confidential
Why Benzodiazepines and Anxiety or Depression So Often Co-Occur
Benzodiazepines are prescribed for anxiety, panic, and sleep problems, so many people who develop dependence started with a real mental health condition. The medication relieves symptoms quickly, then the brain adapts, and stopping brings the anxiety back, often stronger.
That rebound makes it hard to tell what is the original condition and what is withdrawal. It can also make people feel they cannot cope without the drug, which keeps use going.
Depression, trauma, and insomnia follow the same pattern. Substance use and mental health conditions feed each other, which is why treating only one tends to fail.

Integrated Treatment Approach
Both conditions are treated together by one coordinated team. Learn more about our general dual diagnosis care program.
Supervised taper
A gradual, symptom-guided taper with 24/7 clinical monitoring, with substitution by a longer-acting benzodiazepine when appropriate.
Mental health evaluation
Assessment of anxiety, panic, depression, trauma, and sleep, and non-benzodiazepine options for managing them.
Skills that last
Evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, plus mindfulness and other tools for anxiety and sleep without a sedative.
Continuing support
A plan for ongoing therapy, medication follow-up, and relapse prevention after you leave.
Everything runs from one treatment plan, so medical, psychiatric, and therapy decisions stay connected.

Dual Diagnosis Questions
Straight answers to the questions people ask most.
What is dual diagnosis?
It means having a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time, such as benzodiazepine dependence and an anxiety disorder.
Why does my anxiety get worse when I cut back on benzodiazepines?
Part of it is rebound and withdrawal, which usually improves with time. The rest may be your original anxiety, which is treated with therapy and, when appropriate, non-benzodiazepine medication.
Can anxiety be treated without benzodiazepines?
Yes. Therapies such as CBT, certain non-benzodiazepine medications, and skills like mindfulness are effective for many people and do not carry the same dependence risk.
Do you treat depression and trauma alongside benzodiazepine dependence?
Yes. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and sleep problems are assessed and treated together with the taper.
Will I have to stay on a taper while I work on therapy?
The taper and therapy run together. The pace of the taper is set by your clinical team based on how you are doing.
Can I do this as an outpatient?
The right level of care depends on your dose, history, and health. An assessment sets the plan, and supervised care is recommended for high doses or long-term use.
Is dual diagnosis treatment different from regular rehab?
It is more integrated. Mental health and addiction are treated by one coordinated team instead of in separate tracks.
Does insurance cover dual diagnosis care at iRely?
Most PPO plans are accepted, usually out of network. Call 818-262-3537 and we will verify your benefits for free, typically in about five to ten minutes.
