Why Benzo Detox Needs Medical Supervision
Benzodiazepine withdrawal is one of the few drug withdrawals that can be life-threatening. The same overactivity that causes anxiety, tremor, and insomnia can progress to seizures, delirium, and hallucinations.
The safe path is a gradual taper under clinical supervision, not quitting abruptly. A medical team monitors your symptoms, adjusts the schedule, and can respond immediately if something serious develops.
Supervised detox is strongly advised for high doses, long-term use, past seizures, previous failed tapers, or use with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives.
What supervision provides
- 24/7 clinical monitoring for seizures and severe symptoms
- Dose reduction paced to your response
- Substitution with a longer-acting benzodiazepine when appropriate
- Comfort support for sleep, anxiety, and nausea
- A medical team ready to respond right away
- A direct handoff into therapy and aftercare

Benzo Detox Questions
Straight answers to the questions people ask most.
How long does benzo detox take?
It depends on the drug, dose, and your history. A medical taper can take days to weeks and is paced to your symptoms. Treatment continues afterward.
Is benzo detox safe?
Supervised detox is the safe way to come off benzodiazepines. Stopping abruptly can cause seizures and delirium, which is why monitoring and a gradual taper matter.
Do I need detox if I take my medication as prescribed?
Many people physically depend on prescribed benzodiazepines. If you want to stop, or have been told to, a supervised taper is safer than stopping on your own.
What medications are used in benzo detox?
Often a longer-acting benzodiazepine such as diazepam is used to smooth the taper. Comfort and adjunct medications may be used when clinically appropriate.
Can I detox at home?
Some people taper with an outpatient prescriber. Supervised detox is recommended for high doses, long-term use, past seizures, failed tapers, or use with alcohol or opioids.
What happens after detox?
Detox is the first step. iRely follows it with therapy, dual diagnosis care, and aftercare planning. See our benzodiazepine addiction treatment program.
Does insurance cover benzo detox at iRely?
Most PPO plans are accepted, usually out of network. Call 818-262-3537 and we will verify your benefits for free, typically in about five to ten minutes.
What if I also use alcohol or opioids?
Combined use raises withdrawal risk and needs supervised care. See our benzo and alcohol withdrawal page, and tell us about all substances at intake.
